Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Egg
Binds the batter and helps set the pancakes as they cook.
Wholemeal self-raising flour
Provides the structure of the pancakes, with raising agents helping them rise.
Yoghurt
Adds moisture and a slight tang, keeping the pancakes tender.
Grated carrot
Adds moisture and natural sweetness to the batter.
Sultanas or raisins
Add pockets of sweetness and chewy texture.

The step that matters

Cook over medium heat and turn once. Medium heat lets the centre cook through before the outside browns too much. Turning after one to two minutes, once bubbles form and the underside is set, prevents tearing and gives an even golden colour.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, egg, sugar, milk, raisin):

  1. Arrowrootfits better

  3. Shallotfits better
  4. Carrotthe original
