Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Heat sets the proteins in the white and firms the yolk, giving the dish its structure.
Bacon
Renders fat and browns under the grill, adding savoury flavour.
Tomatoes
Soften under the grill, adding moisture and gentle acidity.
Mushrooms
Release moisture while simmering, becoming tender and adding earthy, savoury flavour.
Baked beans
Tomato sauce adds moisture, sweetness and mild acidity to the plate.

The step that matters

Setting the eggs. Eggs turn rubbery or stay runny if heat is uneven or too strong. Gentle, even heat in the pan and then under the grill sets the white while keeping the yolk soft, so timing matters.
