Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to give the cookies richness and a tender texture.
Eggs
Add structure and binding so the dough holds together when rolled and cut.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the dough, helping the cookies rise and lighten.
Flour
Forms the main structure of the dough once mixed with the other ingredients.
Granulated sugar
Creams with the butter for sweetness and a softer, lighter crumb.

The step that matters

Rolling the dough thin. Dough rolled too thick bakes unevenly and stays soft in the center. Rolling it thin and baking quickly keeps the cookies crisp and evenly cooked.
