Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tart apples (in the method)
Provide the main body and crisp, tart flavour of the salad.
Celery (in the method)
Adds crunch and a fresh, slightly savoury contrast to the apple.
Oil
Adds fat and richness to the dressing and carries its flavour.
Whipped cream
Gives the dressing a light, creamy texture and body.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the dressing and slows apple browning.

The step that matters

Beat the dressing into the whipped cream. Whipped cream is a delicate foam that deflates when overmixed or when acid is added too vigorously. Folding gently keeps it light and holds the dressing evenly together.

Swap the lemon
