Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Adds sweetness to balance the sharpness of the vinegar.
Vinegar
Provides the sharp acidic flavor that defines the dressing.
Sweet cream
Adds richness and softens the texture when stirred in at the end.
Mustard
Adds a sharp, pungent flavor that complements the vinegar.

The step that matters

Boil, stirring constantly until thickens. The mixture can scorch or lump on the bottom of the pan if not stirred constantly. Starch and egg-free thickening only set properly with steady heat and stirring.
