What each ingredient does

Eggplant (in the method)
Forms the body of the dish, holding the mashed filling inside its shell.
Bread crumbs
Absorb moisture from the mashed pulp so the filling holds together.
Egg
Binds the mashed eggplant filling so it sets firmly when cooked.
Butter
Adds fat for frying, helping the filling brown and develop flavor.
