Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creams with sugar to trap air and give the cake a tender, rich crumb.
Eggs
Add structure and richness as they set during baking.
Flour
Forms the main structure that holds the cake together as it bakes.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the batter so the cake rises and becomes light.
Nut kernels
Add texture and flavor, and fat that contributes to a moist crumb.

The step that matters

Pour the batter into square flat tins lined with buttered paper to a depth of 3 inches.. A 3-inch depth is thick for a flat tin, so the batter may bake unevenly and need a longer, controlled bake. Lining the tins with buttered paper helps the cake release cleanly.
