What each ingredient does

Round steak
Forms the main body of the loaf and gives it a meaty texture.
Pork
Adds fat and richness, keeping the loaf moist and tender.
Bread crumbs
Absorbs liquid and helps bind the meat so the loaf holds its shape.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together and help the loaf set as it bakes.
Sweet milk
Adds moisture, keeping the loaf tender rather than dry.

The step that matters

Shape into a roll and keep the pan moist. Mixing the meat thoroughly and shaping it firmly lets the loaf hold together when sliced. Adding boiling water to the pan creates steam, which helps prevent the meat from drying out during the long bake.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pork, bread, milk, egg, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Onionthe original
