What each ingredient does

Spaghetti
Forms the bulk of the dish and gives it body.
Bacon
Adds fat and savory flavor as it fries and browns.
Tomatoes (in the method)
Provide moisture and acidity that flavor the sauce.
Cheese
Melts and browns on top, adding richness and a golden crust.

The step that matters

Bake until brown. The topping of cheese and cracker crumbs browns through dry heat, which forms the golden crust. Baking too briefly leaves it pale and the dish underheated. Watch the color rather than relying only on time.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cheese, rice):

  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Asparagusfits better

Fit is the average pairing score against cheese, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
