Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cauliflower (in the method)
Forms the main body of the dish and becomes tender when boiled.
Egg
Binds the sauce and helps it set as it bakes.
Bread crumbs
Add body to the sauce and help the top brown in the oven.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top brown.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness to the sauce.

The step that matters

Covering the dish tightly before baking. The lid traps steam so the sauce and cauliflower heat through and the egg sets gently. Removing the lid afterward lets the top brown.
