Directions

PERNIK — Three-fourths cup of sugar, one tablespoon lard, one tablespoon butter, two eggs, one cup of sour milk, half a cup of molasses, two cups of flour, one teaspoon soda, one teaspoon each cinnamon, cloves and ginger, a little salt. Mix in the order given. Bake in a loaf pan, one and one-fourth hours, in a moderate oven.

FRUIT CAKE — Three cups of flour sifted with three teaspoons of baking powder, one-half cup of butter creamed with one cup of brown sugar, one cup of molasses and three eggs, half a teaspoon each of allspice, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, one cup each of seedless raisins, currants, citron, figs and nuts. Mix your fruit day before making. Bake in slow oven.
