Directions

Prepare one quart of corn-meal gruel. Make a sponge of this gruel, and some unbolted flour and yeast, according to your judgment ; set in a warm place to rise. ' When light, put in one tea-cupful of common molasses, a piece of lard about the size of a hen egg, a little salt ; work in nearly four pints of un- bolted flour.
