What each ingredient does

Finely ground coffee (in the method)
Provides the coffee flavour and aroma that the water extracts as it drips through.

The step that matters

Adding the boiling water gradually. Pouring slowly lets the water pass through the grounds at a steady rate, extracting flavour evenly. Pouring too fast can wash out grounds and leave the coffee weak or uneven.
