Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to trap air and give the cake a rich, tender texture.
Eggs
Whites add structure and lift to the batter as they set in the oven.
Flour
Provides the structure that holds the cake together as it bakes.
Loaf sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps the butter cream to a light texture.

The step that matters

Let the jumbles cool on the tins before removing. The cakes are fragile while hot and set firmly only as they cool, so removing them early can break them.
