Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the body of the soup when mashed finely.
Milk
Makes the soup liquid and creamy as the base.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, velvety texture.
Eggs
Thicken the soup and add richness when stirred in.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smooth mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Adding the eggs and cream. Eggs thicken when heated, so they can curdle or scramble if the soup is too hot. Stir them in gently off the heat and keep the soup below boiling.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, cream, pork, potato, onion, butter, egg):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
