Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Add structure to the batter as they set during baking.
Flour
Forms the structure that holds the cake together.
Butter
Adds fat for a tender crumb and richer flavour.
Sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps it brown and stay moist.
Cream of tartar
Acidifies the batter and stabilises its texture for rising with soda.
Soda
Reacts with the acid in the batter to produce gas for rising.

The step that matters

Frosting the cake while it is still hot. Warm cake lets the soft chocolate frosting spread and soak slightly into the surface. If the cake cools first, the frosting may sit unevenly on top rather than setting smoothly.

“What each ingredient does” and “The step that matters” were written by Claude from this recipe’s own method and reviewed in samples by CompKitchen.
