What each ingredient does

Apples (in the method)
Provide the filling that softens and turns sweet-tart as the dumplings bake.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the sauce and dough, giving a rounder flavor.
Sugar
Sweetens the syrupy sauce that the dumplings bake in.

The step that matters

Keep the sauce at a steady boil. If the sauce boils away too fast, the dumplings can dry out and the sauce thickens unevenly. Adding more boiling water keeps the liquid level steady so the dumplings cook through in syrup.
