Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pineapples
Provides the main fruit flavor and the juice that becomes the syrup.
Powdered sugar
Sweetens the fruit and draws out juice to form a syrup.
Cream
Adds fat, giving the frozen dessert a rich, smooth texture.
Whipped cream
Adds air, making the frozen texture lighter and less dense.

The step that matters

Stir the pineapple bits in when half frozen. If the custard is still liquid, the pineapple pieces sink. If it is frozen solid, they cannot be mixed in evenly. Stirring at half frozen spreads the fruit through the cream while it still holds its shape.

Swap the pineapple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Raspberryfits better
  4. Pineapplethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
