What each ingredient does

Finely ground coffee (in the method)
Supplies the flavor compounds that the hot water draws out into the brew.
Boiling water
Extracts flavor from the grounds and sets the strength of the finished coffee.

The step that matters

Add the boiling water gradually. Pouring slowly lets the water pass through the grounds evenly, so flavor is extracted steadily rather than all at once. Covering the pot between additions holds in heat, keeping the brew hot and extraction consistent.
