Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Gather utensils: silver knife, glass lemon squeezer, grater, strainer, saucepan; avoid tin and iron utensils.

  2. Gather materials: lemon or other fruits, sugar water.

  3. Determine proportions: use half a lemon per glass or 2–3 per quart of water; add other fruits as desired; add 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar per quart; test by taste.

Make the syrup and juice

  1. Dissolve sugar in part of water and bring to a boil.

  2. When cool, add lemon juice and remaining water, ice, and serve; add grated rind to boiling water if desired.

  3. Alternatively, use lump sugar and rub lemon peel on each lump before dissolving.

  4. For other fruits, mash pulpy fruit and berries, add water, and strain.

  5. Optionally add cherries, strawberries, or pulp before serving; cut large berries.

  6. Add carbonated water just before serving for brightness.

Serve

  1. Serve: a quart of fruit punch serves eight people.
