To Make the Hallowe'en Sandwiches

eight pies

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the bread

  1. When the bread is a day old, cut it into slices one-third inch thick and pair the slices.

  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice.

  3. Place the other slice on top, butter side down, and press firmly.

  4. Using a thimble, cut out circles on one piece of bread, then cut nose and mouth with a knife; the butter shows through to resemble features.

Make the pies

  1. Make eight pumpkin pies.

  2. Combine 1 cup flour, 5 tablespoons lard, 3 tablespoons water, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

  3. Cut the lard into the flour and salt.

  4. Add enough water to make a stiff dough on a floured board.

  5. Roll the dough into a one-fourth inch thick shape.

  6. Place dough in tin muffin pans to make individual pies, filling with the mixture.

  7. Bake for 30 minutes in a moderate oven.
