What each ingredient does

Molasses
Adds sweetness and a deep, rich flavour that balances the bitterness of the porter.
Brisk porter (in the method)
Provides the base beer flavour and character of the drink.

The step that matters

Bottling with good corks. A tight seal keeps the carbonation and aroma inside the bottle and protects the drink from air. Loose or poor corks let it go flat and can let in spoilage.
