Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rhubarb
Provides the main tart flavor and the base liquid of the drink.
Lemon
Adds acidity that brightens the tartness, and the rind adds aroma.
White sugar
Adds sweetness that balances the sharp tartness of the rhubarb and lemon.

The step that matters

Stir in the sugar until it is dissolved. Sugar dissolves most easily in warm liquid. If grains remain, the drink will taste gritty and its sweetness will be uneven, so stir until no crystals are visible.

Swap the rhubarb

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lemon, sugar):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Gingerfits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Rhubarbthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lemon, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
