Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the edible cups and supply the juicy base of the salad.
Mayonnaise
Adds moisture and richness, binding the diced vegetables together.
Celery
Adds crisp texture that contrasts with the soft tomato flesh.

The step that matters

Blanching the tomatoes. A brief dip in boiling water loosens the skin without cooking the flesh. Leaving the tomatoes in longer softens them, so the cups may collapse and the diced salad turns mushy.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (celery, lettuce):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Beetrootfits better
  3. Turnipfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against celery, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
