Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mutton
Its meat and connective tissue release flavour and body into the water during long simmering.
Water
Acts as the cooking liquid that extracts flavour and gelatin from the meat into the broth.
Well cooked rice
Adds starch and bulk, thickening the broth and making it a more filling dish.

The step that matters

Simmer slowly. A gentle simmer draws flavour and gelatin out of the meat gradually. A hard boil makes the broth cloudy and greasy by emulsifying fat into it.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mutton, pepper, rice):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Carrotfits better
  3. Tomatofits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against mutton, pepper, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
