Chicken Pot Pie

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Joint the chicken and parboil it until partially cooked.

  2. Prepare soda biscuit dough and line the sides of a pot with it, leaving the bottom unlined.

Assemble and cook

  1. Layer the chicken and sliced potatoes in the pot, sprinkling with pepper, salt, and mace.

  2. If there isn't enough broth from the chicken, add enough water to cover the chicken.

  3. Top with a layer of soda biscuit dough about ½ inch thick.

  4. Fold a towel and place it over the pot before putting on the lid to trap steam.

  5. Thicken the broth with a little butter before adding it to the pot.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main meat and the broth that cooks the dish.
Soda biscuit dough
Forms the crust that lines the pot sides and covers the filling.
Potatoes
Add starch and body to the filling as they soften during cooking.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the broth, helping it thicken smoothly.

The step that matters

Fold a towel over the pot before the lid. The towel absorbs condensation so drips do not fall back onto the crust and filling, and the trapped steam keeps the cooking moist and even.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, potato, pepper, butter, biscuit):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Capersfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, potato, pepper, butter, biscuit. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
