Baked Tomatoes

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Do not skin the tomatoes. Scoop out a small area from the tops of the tomatoes.

Make the stuffing

  1. In a skillet, fry the chopped onion in butter until soft.

  2. Mix the fried onion with bread crumbs, cayenne pepper, and salt.

Bake and serve

  1. Fill the tomatoes with the stuffing, allowing it to slightly overflow.

  2. Bake the stuffed tomatoes for 20-25 minutes until heated through.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the edible shell that holds the stuffing and softens as it bakes.
Onion
Adds savory sweetness and flavour when fried soft in butter.
Butter
Fat that softens the onion and adds richness to the stuffing.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the onion and butter juices and give the stuffing body.

The step that matters

Scoop out the tops without piercing the tomato walls. The tomato skin is left on to help hold its shape, so a torn wall lets juices escape and the stuffing sink. Keeping the walls intact lets the shell hold the filling while it bakes.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, butter, bread, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, butter, bread, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
