Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh cream
Whipped to stiffness, it forms a light, airy topping that sits on the fruit.
Powdered sugar
Dissolves easily into the juice, adding sweetness to the liquid that coats the fruit.
Brandy
Adds a warm, aromatic note to the juice mixture.
Maraschino liqueur
Adds sweetness and a distinct cherry-like aroma to both the juice and the cream.
Oranges
Provide acidity and fresh juice that flavours and moistens the fruit.

The step that matters

Beat the cream until stiff. Cream must be beaten to the stiff stage to hold its shape on top of the fruit. Under-beaten cream stays runny and will sink into the juice, while over-beaten cream turns grainy and can separate.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pineapple, banana, grape, peach, sugar, brandy, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Apricotfits better
  3. Strawberryfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pineapple, banana, grape, peach, sugar, brandy, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
