Why it works: Apple and grape match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 1,659 recipes. Both carry 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, which smells green bell pepper, earthy. The science ↓

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cut off the upper third of the pumpkin and remove seeds and membrane.

  2. Stand a tall vase in the center of the pumpkin and fill it with yellow chrysanthemums.

  3. Surround the vase with fruit, placing oranges and apples inside the pumpkin.

  4. Allow clusters of white grapes to fall over the edges.

  5. Place the pumpkin on a low silver tray and arrange 3 or 4 oranges around it, cut partway down in quarters and turned back like rose leaves.

  6. Add a few chrysanthemums with their own foliage.
