Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish and, once cooked and drained, becomes the tender base for the bake.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness, helping the cabbage stay tender and lightly coat during baking.

The step that matters

Drain the cabbage until completely dry. Cabbage holds a lot of water after boiling. Excess moisture dilutes the cream and keeps the bake soggy rather than tender and concentrated.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, cream):

  1. Spinachfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Potatofits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
