What each ingredient does

Hops
Provide the bitter, aromatic flavour that characterises the beer.
Molasses
Supplies fermentable sugar for the yeast and adds sweetness and depth.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars into alcohol and carbonation.
Wintergreen
Adds a strong minty aroma and flavour.

The step that matters

Add the yeast at milk-warm. Yeast is killed by high heat and works slowly when cold, so the liquid should be warm but not hot. Too hot can stop fermentation before it starts.
