What each ingredient does

Hominy
Is the main ingredient; soaking and slow boiling soften its kernels for eating.

The step that matters

Do not add salt while cooking. Salt added during cooking toughens the corn's outer skins and hardens the kernels, so they stay firm instead of softening fully.
