Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Form the soft, sweet filling that the crust encloses while steaming.
Short pie crust
Wraps each apple, holding its shape and keeping the filling contained during steaming.
Rice
Coats the outside so the crust sticks to the apple and gives a grainy outer layer.
Cream sauce
Adds richness and moisture alongside the steamed dumplings.

The step that matters

Wrapping each apple fully in pie crust. Any gap in the crust lets steam and water reach the apple and can split the pastry as it cooks, so the wrapper should be sealed all the way around each fruit.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, cream, sauce):

  1. Coconutfits better
  2. Avocadofits better
  3. Vanillafits better
  4. Applethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, cream, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
