Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the meat and flavour-rich body for the broth and the cooked meat for later use.
Celery
Adds aromatic flavour to the broth as it simmers.
Onion
Adds savoury aroma and sweetness to the broth as it simmers.

The step that matters

Skim thoroughly after the water reaches a boil. Impurities and coagulated proteins rise to the surface as the water heats. Removing them keeps the soup clear, while letting it boil hard would break them up and cloud the broth.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, onion, celery, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, onion, celery, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
