Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point. The book gives no cooking times either; the times in the steps were added in transcription, so check for doneness rather than trusting the clock.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, beat the eggs and mix in the sugar and milk.

  3. Add the flour and baking powder, and mix until smooth.

  4. Pour the batter into a greased baking dish.

Top and bake

  1. If desired, cover the top with sliced apples, peaches, or apricots.

  2. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the top, then dot with butter.

  3. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure as they set during baking.
Flour
Forms the main structure of the cake as the batter sets.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the batter so the cake rises and becomes light.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, and helps the top brown.
Sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps the top brown in the oven.
