Why it works: Orange and lemon match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 10,634 recipes. Both carry 3-hexenal, which smells apple, fruity. The science ↓

What each ingredient does
- Lemons
- Provide the main acidity and bright citrus flavour of the lemonade.
- Oranges
- Add sweet citrus juice and aromatic oil from the rind to the lemonade.
- Loaf sugar
- Sweetens the lemonade and balances the sharp citrus acidity.
The step that matters
Strain through a jelly bag until clear. Straining removes rind particles, pulp and sediment so the lemonade stays clear and does not turn cloudy or gritty over time.
