Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Set into a cover over the mushrooms, giving a custardy, firm topping when baked.
Butter
Adds richness and carries the seasoning while stewing, and browns the bread crumbs on top.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden layer on top of the eggs during baking.
Mushrooms
Form the savoury base; stewing softens them and concentrates their flavour.

The step that matters

Bake until the eggs are set. Eggs set when their proteins coagulate under heat. Pulling the dish too early leaves a runny layer, while over-baking makes the eggs rubbery and dry.
