Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main flavour and body of the soup, with natural acidity.
Rice
Thickens the soup as its starch releases during simmering.
Cream
Adds richness and a smoother, softer texture to the finished soup.
Chicken
Gives the broth its savoury, meaty base as it simmers.

The step that matters

Adding the cream and butter. Cream and butter are added just before serving so they stay fresh and smooth. Boiling dairy for a long time can cause it to separate or turn grainy.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, rice, cream, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Onionfits about as well
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, rice, cream, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
