Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gelatin
Sets the mixture into a firm, sliceable structure as it chills.
Cream
Whipped to stiff peaks, it adds lightness and a rich, creamy texture.
Pineapple
Provides fruit flavor and acidity that brightens the sweet cream.
Sugar
Sweetens the dessert and balances the tartness of the pineapple.

The step that matters

Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled mixture. Whipped cream is a foam of trapped air. Vigorous stirring deflates it, leaving a dense dessert. Cool the gelatin mixture first so it does not melt the cream or lose its airiness.

Swap the pineapple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (gelatin, sugar, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Raspberryfits about as well
  4. Pineapplethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against gelatin, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
