Chocoeate Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Make the batter

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and butter.

  3. Add the sweet milk and mix well.

  4. Sift together the flour and baking powder, then add to the mixture.

  5. Stir in the beaten eggs until fully combined.

Make the chocolate and bake

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the grated chocolate, 5 tablespoons of sugar, and boiling water.

  2. Stir over low heat until smooth, then add to the batter.

  3. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan and bake for 20 minutes.
