What each ingredient does

Rice
Starch that absorbs the boiling water and swells into tender, separate grains.
Boiling water
Cooks the rice by heat and hydrates the starch as it absorbs the liquid.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the plain cooked grains.

The step that matters

Boil without stirring. Stirring releases surface starch from the grains, which makes rice gummy and sticky. Leaving it undisturbed lets the grains absorb water evenly and cook into separate pieces.
