What each ingredient does

Roast mutton
Forms the main body of the pie as the meat layers that carry its savory flavor.
Tomatoes
Add moisture and acidity that keep the meat layers from drying out while baking.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, browned topping and absorb some of the juices from the layers.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that helps the surface brown and the layers taste rounder.
