Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the beef

  1. Finely chop the beef, removing all gristle and ligaments.

  2. Season with salt, pepper, and onion juice if desired.

Bake and serve

  1. Shape the mixture into a cake in a tin pan, ensuring it's not packed too tightly.

  2. Place 1 tablespoon of butter on top of the steak.

  3. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes.

  4. Transfer to a hot platter to serve.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the protein structure and meaty flavour of the patty.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, moistening the surface as it melts over the steak.

The step that matters

Shape the mixture loosely. Packing the ground meat too tightly makes it dense and firm when cooked. A loose shape keeps the texture tender and lets heat move evenly through the cake.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, butter):

  1. Potatofits about as well
  2. Onionthe original
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Tomatofits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
