Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Sweetens the dish and dissolves into the syrup that forms the base.
Gelatin
Forms a network that sets the mixture into a soft gel as it cools.
Shredded pineapple
Adds fruit flavor and a bright acidity to the gelatin.
Whipped cream
Adds air and fat, keeping the set gelatin light and creamy.

The step that matters

Folding in the whipped cream. Fold the cream in only when the mixture just begins to thicken. Too early, the mixture stays runny and the cream deflates; too late, the gelatin sets in lumps and the cream won't blend evenly.

Swap the pineapple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, gelatin, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Raspberryfits about as well
  4. Pineapplethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, gelatin, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
