What each ingredient does

Boston brown bread
Provides the dark color and sweet, dense crumb that contrasts with the white bread.
White bread
Provides a soft, light layer that holds the buttered slices together.
Butter
Adds fat and moisture that binds the slices and keeps the layers from drying out.
