Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Soup bone
Gives the broth its body and savoury flavour during long simmering.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and a bright, tangy flavour to the broth.
Rolled oats or rice
Add body and help thicken the soup as they cook.
Potatoes
Add starch that softens into the broth and gives the soup substance.

The step that matters

Removing the grease. Fat from the bone collects on top as the broth cools. If it is not removed, the soup tastes greasy and heavy. Chilling makes the fat solidify so it can be lifted off cleanly.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, carrot, onion, potato, parsley, oats, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Okrafits better
