Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mushrooms
Main ingredient; they soften and release their juices, forming the body of the dish.
Butter
Adds richness and carries flavor while the mushrooms simmer, and browns the surface when basted.
Broth or cream
Supplies liquid that gently cooks the mushrooms and makes a savory sauce; cream adds richness.
Bread rounds
Act as a base that soaks up the mushroom juices and sauce.

The step that matters

Simmering the mushrooms in the broth or cream. Simmering slowly lets the mushrooms release and reabsorb their liquid, concentrating flavor. Boiling hard or cooking too long can toughen the mushrooms and break down a cream sauce.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mushroom, butter, chicken, pepper, bread):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against mushroom, butter, chicken, pepper, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
