Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gelatin
Sets the liquid into a wobbly, sliceable structure as it cools.
Whipped cream
Adds air and richness, giving the set dessert a light, creamy texture.
Sugar
Sweetens the base and balances the acidity of the fruit juices.
Strawberry juice
Provides the main flavor and liquid volume of the dessert.
Orange juice
Adds citrus acidity and aroma to the fruit base.

The step that matters

Fold in the whipped cream when the mixture begins to set. If the base is too warm, the cream deflates and melts into it; if it is fully set, the cream will not blend evenly. Gelatin is at the right point when it thickens slightly and mounds softly.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (gelatin, sugar, strawberry, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Raspberryfits better
  3. Pineapplefits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against gelatin, sugar, strawberry, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
