What each ingredient does

Gelatine
Forms the setting network that gives the finished liquid its firm, jelly-like body.
Cold water
Hydrates the gelatine granules so they swell and soften before dissolving.
Boiling liquid
Melts the softened gelatine so it disperses evenly through the liquid.

The step that matters

Dissolving the softened gelatine. Gelatine must be fully melted before it sets. Adding only a little boiling liquid first and stirring until clear helps it dissolve evenly without lumps. The remaining liquid is added cold afterward to cool the mixture.
