Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Prime sweet butter
Adds richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel to the sauce.
Flour
Thickens the liquid as it heats, giving the sauce body.

The step that matters

Stir continually until it begins to simmer. Flour mixed into cold water can clump if left unstirred. Constant stirring disperses the starch so it thickens smoothly as the liquid heats.
